A Chinese-speaking congregation, thirty-two years here

Two languages, one congregation, one table.

We worship in Mandarin at half past nine and in English at eleven, and we eat together in between. Most families here speak both at home, and the church is arranged the way those families actually are.

About us

Started by nine families in a rented room.

Thirty-two years ago nine families rented a room on a Sunday afternoon because the nearest Mandarin service was two hours away. The room is now this building, and the nine families are about two hundred and forty people.

Half of the congregation was born here and half was not, which means every decision this church makes has to work in two languages. That is not a difficulty we are managing. It is what we are.

The building, two salaries, and the mission field.

A fifth of everything given leaves this church for mission work overseas, and the accounts are read out at the annual members meeting every March.
